Scouts by the SIDR survivors

Bangladesh Scouts members are working for the Cyclone
Sidr survivors continuously, as Disaster First Responder, in all
the affected areas. Scouts and Rovers are working together with the local
administration in distributing relief materials like food, drinking water,
Tarpaulin for shelter, ORS and water purification powder. With the support of
UNDP, Bangladesh
Scouts has already distributed 2,49,000 packets of water purification powder,
10,800 tarpaulins, 25000 kg flattened rice (Chira) and 5000 kg
molasses (Gur) among the sidr affected areas. Besides 1,00,000 packets
of ORS have been distributed with the support of the Directorate General of
Health Services of the Govt. of Bangladesh. To
help further, Bangladesh Scouts & Rover
Regions are producing ORS for the Sidr survivors. An agreement has been signed between UNDP Dhaka and Bangladesh Scouts for distribution of warm cloths,
kitchen utensils, tarpaulin, candles, sarees, lungis, etc. among 7500
families of Jhalokathi district. Another agreement with UNDP Dhaka has been
signed for the distribution of 33,41,160 liters of pure drinking water among
1,85,600 families. The International Centenary COMDECA kicks off on 9th.Dec.’07
at Coxs’ Bazaar, in the port district of Chittagong. As the country has
suffered severely due to Sidr, the programme of the much-planned Centenary
COMDECA has been re-scheduled so that Rovers, Scouts & Scout leaders can
come to the scour of their distressed countrymen, in their times of need.
Under the revised schedule, apart from the programme at Coxs Bazaar, there
will be six Sidr survivors work-camps, organized simultaneously named, after
the affected area, as the Sunderbans. The duration of the
International Centenary COMDECA & these work-camps will be from 7-14
December 2007. The Centenary COMDECA at Coxs’ Bazaar, has a number of
‘Challenges’ which are: 1. Doshe mile kori kaj: Let's do it together:
- re-construction of houses in the
Sidr affected area
- re-construction of school
structure and youth clubs
- re-construction of roads
- development of Matir Killa
- Earth pyramid which are shelters for cattle during tidal upsurge 2. Bhalo thaki shokole: Health and Well-being: -
re-construction of water-sealed latrines - re-sinking
of tube-wells -
dissemination of health related message (house-to-house campaign) - health camps
(treatment for injured and trauma patients) - distribution
of utensils and sleeping kits
3. Krishok banchai amra banchi: Let's save the farmers:
- distribution of cattle and
agricultural inputs
- distribution of low cost tractor
through community management
- training on compost manure
- cattle vaccination programme 4. Cholo sobai schoole jai: Let's all go to school:
- distribution benches tables in
school - distribution
of books & stationery to students 5. Prokritike jano: Exploring nature:
- visit Sidr ravaged forest
- campaign to develop Green barrage
and reclaim land at the coastal belt -
campaign to conserve nature and world
life 6. Camp Fire Plus: - mock
trial on disaster first response - songs and performing arts to encourage the disaster
survivors
